Reality Bites For Betting Shops

Following the stake reduction from £100 to £2 on FOBT’s, William has announced it is closing 700 shops with job losses of up to 4500, other betting shop chains have also announced there will be widespread closures. At GS Gaming we are very unsympathetic towards the bookies as it has long been felt large numbers of shops were springing up to take advantage of the 4 machines per shop allowance, some high streets still have 3 or 4 betting shops within 5 to 10 yards of each other. Maybe now, it can be argued, betting shop numbers are coming down to a realistic level.

It is without question FOBT’s have had a huge detrimental effect on our industry, both in the single sites and in our Adult Gaming Centres. The stake reduction was implemented on the 1stApril so it is still early days but eventually we are looking to see an upturn in machine income as customers leave the betting shops.

We are also looking for the government to reintroduce the triennial revenue on stakes and prizes, in fact it is now 10 years since the stakes and prizes were increased to the current level of £1 stake and £100 jackpot. The ongoing debate on FOBT’s by the government has pushed the needs of the low stakes gambling industry way down the pecking order. A stake and prizes increase to £1.50 and £150 jackpot would be most welcome.

ICE exhibition at the London Excel arena 2019

Gs Gaming attended this year ICE exhibition at the London Excel arena. It is the biggest event in the annual exhibition calendar and attracts visitors from all over the world. As always, all the major manufactures were out in force. Very noticeable was the sheer size of the stands from Novomatic UK and the Gauselmann Group, they are two of the biggest players in our industry and that was certainly evident at the show.

The exhibition itself doesn’t provide the same network opportunities as the EAG exhibition in January, but we still made time to engage with some of our key suppliers such as Reflex Gaming, Blueprint Machines, Genesis Games and Novomatic UK.

The following photos will give you some idea of the offering at the show.

EAG 2019

Once again GS Gaming were in attendance at this year’s annual amusement and gaming machine exhibition at the Excel arena in London. This has become a flagship event for all associated with our industry and a fantastic opportunity to view all the latest new products out there.

Particularly impressive was the Novomatic stand, where taking pride of place was their newly launched Prismatic terminal, a twin screen multi-game terminal featuring all the latest games from Novomatic, Astra, Bell Fruit, Innov8 and Harlequin. The machine is available in Cat C and B3 formats and looks like it’s going to be a huge success if early test results are anything to go by. We anticipate having a number of Prismatic terminals in stock by Mid-February

Over on the Blueprint gaming stand there were many impressive products on display, in particular the new DOND menu available on the Alphastar cabinet, featuring exclusive and proven titles such as Eye of Horus, Fishing Frenzy and Luck of the Irish. This product is available in Cat C and we are pleased to announce we have placed an order for a number of these terminals which will be available to all new and existing customers by February. Also attracting a lot of interest on the Blueprint stand was a new Roulette game with a £2 maximum stake and £500 jackpot housed in the ever-popular Aurora cabinet, again we have placed an order for a number of these cabinets to be sited into our AGC estate, Reels Casino Slots Ltd.

During a hectic day we also managed to visit many of our regular supplier such as Wessex Coin, Innovative Technology, NSM music, Electrocoin, SG Gaming, Reflex Gaming, Genesis Games and many more.

Also Keeping up with all the latest legislative changes in our industry, we spent time with the gambling commission as well as our colleagues at BACTA. Hough & Bollard, our legal advisers were also in attendance.

The EAG also presents a great opportunity to network with many of our industry colleagues and catch up on all the latest gossip and news, which we managed to do over a drink or two!

The next trade show is the ICE Totally Gaming show to be held at the Excel on 5th to 7th February,

again, we will be in full attendance……. so watch this space!

We are delighted to say that the government this week announced that the change to reduce the stake of B2 Gaming machines from £100 to £2 will now take place in April 2019.

This is fantastic news for our industry and all those harmed by FOBT’s over the years.

The original stake reduction was due to take place in October 2020, this was then changed to October 2019….to the dismay of many in the industry and government and resulted in the resignation of sports minister, Tracey Crouch, finally we now have April 2019 confirmed and a date we can all look forward to.

GS Gaming continues it’s support and has made another contribution to GAMBLE AWARE which is an independent charity tasked to fund research and treatment services to help reduce gamble related harm in Great Britain. You will see the GAMBLE AWARE sticker on every single one of our gaming machines along with the NATIONAL GAMBLING HELPLINE NUMBER 0808 8020 133.

As part of our ongoing commitment to social responsibility we are also members of BACTA, the UK’s largest trade association representing the gaming machine industry.

On another high-profile issue, as a fully licenced gaming machine operator it is our duty to advise all customers of the threat of money laundering taking place through all gaming machines in their establishments. We encourage customers to take necessary steps to spot money laundering and prevent customers spending the proceeds of crime on their machines. More information is available through the gambling commission website: or contact GS Gaming on 020 8598 2700.

We have continued our roll out of digital gaming machines for pubs and clubs with the purchase of a small number of Cat C, B4 and B3A gaming machines featuring content from popular suppliers: Bell fruit games, Blueprint, Storm Games and Reflex gaming.  These are now available on very flexible profit share terms, call now on 07795 188314 to order yours today!

The cut in the maximum stake on a FOBT from £100 to £2 will not come into play until October 2019. This was met with dismay to many in the trade as it was widely expected the reduction will take place in April 2019. It means yet another year in which problem and at-risk gamblers will be exposed to these harmful machines sited in every bookmaker on the High Street.

Whilst we at GS Gaming are hugely disappointed it has taken so long for the government to implement any kind of decisive action, we are now pleased a deadline has finally been set and we can now compete on a level playing field.
